Shanghai Changzheng Hospital
Shanghai, China
From Sketch to Reality
Located in the Pudong area, the Hospital for Shanghai has modern amenities with traditional symbology embedded into the fabric of the plan sensitive to the Chinese culture and the environment. The design inspirations in the site design are the solar system, the lotus flower, and the yin-yang. The main buildings of the plan were sited to orbit the main core of the hospital, as radiating paths and additional wings form petals. Gardens, fountains, large public spaces and plazas help to reinforce these themes and further the hospital's goals as a haven for visitors. The resulting arrangement of elements using these forms provides an efficient movement between medical professionals, patients, vehicular, and pedestrian circulation movements. The Shanghai Changzheng Hospital is the largest new hospital complex ever constructed in China in a single phase.
